January’s Reading List includes books I’ve read in December as well since that was a slow reading month for me due to the holidays. You can catch up with my November Reading List here. It looks like I gravitated mainly towards thrillers/suspense novels this month.
My highly anticipated reads were the 2 books below, one of which I had listed on my Books I Want to Read in 2018 post.
I heard they’re both optioned for films so you know they have to be good. However, I wasn’t impressed with one of them. Read on for my reviews.
Lie To Me // This book had very similar vibes to Gone Girl. Ethan, the husband, finds a note from his wife Sutton telling him not to look for her. As everyone speculates on the whereabouts of Sutton, all fingers point to Ethan. Again, the first half of the book was very similar to Gone Girl. But that’s where the similarities end. There were so many twists in the second half. This book will have you guessing up to the very last sentence!
Second Life // Julia’s sister, Kate, is murdered in some alley in Paris. Julia learns that Kate has been using an online adult site so she visits those sites to see if she can find any of the men who knew Kate. I’ve read Before I Go to Sleep by the same author which I really enjoyed but I wasn’t very impressed with this one. This was the worst book of the bunch!
I Am Watching You // Two young girls, aged 16, are on a train, when they are approached by two older men. Ella witnesses this interaction and despite her suspicions, she does not interfere. The next day, there’s news that Anna, one of the girls, has gone missing. Don’t make assumptions because they will be all wrong in the end!
The Chalk Man // Chapters alternate between 1986, when Eddie is 12 years old, and 2016, when he’s grown. In 1986, Eddie and his 4 friends draw chalk men to relay secret messages to each other. One day, a chalk man drawing leads them into the woods where they discover a dismembered body. In 2016, Eddie receives an anonymous letter with a chalk figure, taking him back all those years ago, to the murder which was never resolved. There were some scenes that were quite gory and descriptive. I still have some of the imagery in my head days after having finished the book! The ending was utterly creepy and I did not see it coming! I highly recommend this one!
The Wife Between Us // I had such high expectations for this book but I thought it was just ok. Don’t get me wrong, it was suspenseful enough for me to continue reading and there were several twists that I didn’t see coming. Nellie, recently divorced from Richard, finds out that he’s already engaged to someone else. It seems like your typical scorned-woman novel but without giving anything away, let me just say it isn’t. It was a fun read but I wouldn’t call it the best. It’s getting rave reviews so you can read and judge for yourself.
The Woman in the Window // Anna, the main character, drinks, a LOT, and in this case, takes several medications to control her agoraphobia. So it’s predictable where she sometimes makes a cocktail of drink and medicine and you know what that means: hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, no one to believe her, etc. Anna spends her days spying on her neighbors. One evening, after much drink and too many pills, she witnesses a murder in one of the houses across the street. Except no one believes her. The chapters and sentences are short so it’s easy reading and they suck you in. I enjoyed this one and recommend you add it to your read list.
