July Reading List
This summer has been a good one for lots of reading! I mostly read at night when I’ve put the kids to bed and I have some peace and quiet finally. They’re old enough now that the husband and I tell them to get in bed and they actually listen! lol Anyway, on to the list of books. I have to tell you that I’m mostly drawn to psychological thrillers but also to the occasional chick-lit.
One True Loves // Emma marries Jesse, her high school sweetheart but on their first wedding anniversary, he’s on a helicopter that goes missing over the Pacific. Emma moves home in grief. Fast forward a few years, and she runs into Sam, an old friend. She starts falling in love again and they get engaged. Long story short, Jess is found alive so now Emma has a husband and a fiancé. Who does she pick? It was a bittersweet novel.
Only Daughter // Rebecca Winter disappeared when she was 16 years old. Eleven years later she shows up at home and soon she is back to living her old life. Or is she? I’m not spoiling it by telling you that she’s not the ‘real’ Rebecca but I was surprised by the ending. I don’t want to spoil that so you’ll have to read it for yourself.
Gone Without a Trace // Hannah comes back from a business trip and finds her boyfriend has disappeared from her life; furniture that was his is gone, emails and texts from him are gone as well. In this day and age of social media, it was a bit hard to believe that he could access Hannah’s accounts to delete EVERYTHING that mentioned him. Not my favorite but it was an interesting read to see how it played out.
The Girl Before // I thought this book was a great read! Armed men come and take Clara’s husband. Clara is completely oblivious/naive to what is happening but is still loyal to him. The plot involves human trafficking. This book shows how someone can be so brainwashed that they don’t realize how disturbing their life is. Highly recommend!
The Chemist // This book is by the same author who penned the Twilight books. I was never interested in reading the Twilight series but this book caught my attention. It’s about an ex-agent who used to work for the government but is now on the run. She’s given another chance to save her life by taking on one more case. I thought the love interest was the most boring aspect of this novel. Seemed a bit too YA for me. Otherwise, it held my interest enough for me to finish it.
Open House // I loved this novel! It was a relatively quick read. Samantha’s husband has left her and she opens her house to boarders so she can pay the mortgage and meets several people in the process. I thought this book was fun and humorous.
Into the Darkest Corner // Catherine dates a guy who turns out to be abusive. He eventually ends up in prison and she’s now known as Cathy, having moved on with her life. Until one day when she gets a phone call letting her know he is being released from prison. She’s moved on but it turns out he has not! This was another interesting read.
Behind Her Eyes // Very interesting concept! But a bit unrealistic and farfetched. Having said that, I love psychological thrillers and this will definitely keep you guessing! That’s all I can say without giving anything away. But read it and let me know what you think!!
