January Reading List

Hi everyone! Hope your 2019 is off to a great start! It’s the first book review of the new year and I have some good ones for you. I read 6 books this month. Some of these aren’t out yet but make sure you add them to your TBR list. I also wrote a post of book releases in 2019 that you’ll want to check out if you’re interested in new books coming out this year.

The Promise by Teresa Driscoll*

Publication Date: February 7, 2019

Beth, Sally and Carol met at a boarding school many years ago. The school is about to be demolished and they’re afraid a secret that’s long buried there will come to the surface. Beth and Sally still keep in touch. However, they’ve lost touch with Carol and desperate to contact her, they hire a private investigator to track her down. It was a slow read but I didn’t feel it dragged on or was boring one bit. Everything built up towards the end though, so many twists and turns! What an explosive ending!

The Innocent Wife by Amy Lloyd

I’ve always been curious why someone would fall in love with someone in prison. Samantha is obsessed with Dennis, who’s convicted of killing a young girl in Florida twenty years ago and sits on death row. However, Samantha believes he’s been wrongly accused and believes in his innocence. She writes to him and before long, she visits him in person, him behind bars. Would you believe me if I told you they marry while he’s in prison? Well, they do, no spoiler there. Just as there are people out there who think he’s a murderer, there are just as many who think he’s innocent, including Samantha. Eventually he’s released and Samantha thinks they’ll have a normal life as a married couple. I’m not sure how naive someone can be before you call them idiotic! It’s no surprise when Sam starts to believe that Dennis might not be as innocent as he claims. I didn’t know the exact twists going into this novel but you know the ending isn’t going to be positive.

Between the Lies by Michelle Adams*

Publication Date: January 10, 2019 on Goodreads (Amazon shows the publication date as March 5, not sure which one is right.)

In a quick summary, Chloe has been in an accident and wakes up with amnesia. She doesn’t even remember her family. It was a slow read but as the story progresses, the reader is right there with Chloe as events are revealed, some reveals that made me gasp alongside her. I kind of figured out the ending but that didn’t dampen my overall enjoyment of this book.

The Noise Downstairs by Linwood Barclay

Paul’s wife picks up an old-fashioned typewriter at a yard sale for her husband. Paul is recovering from a head injury and at night, he swears he hears the sound of the typewriter keys being hit. Paranormal thoughts went through my head and I was creeped out! Don’t worry if paranormal isn’t your thing though, it’s really not that creepy {in retrospect}. I can’t say anything further without spoiling it.

The Nowhere Child by Christian White*

Publication Date: January 22, 2019

Twenty six years ago, a toddler named Sammy Went disappeared from a small rural town in Kentucky and was never found. Kim, a photographer living in Australia, is approached by a stranger and told that she might be that missing girl. Long story short, DNA confirms she is that little girl. It’s revealed pretty early on that Kim and Sammy are the same. But the mystery remains on who and why. Family drama, religious cults, snakes, it’s got it all. Definitely recommend this debut!

Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks*

Charlotte takes her best friend’s 4 year old daughter Alice to the school fair along with her own 3 children. The unthinkable happens and Alice disappears. What’s worse – losing your own child or a friend’s child? Either scenario is just unthinkable! Chapters alternate between Charlotte and Harriet, Alice’s mother. It’d be easy to side with one and blame the other but through their stories, you realize things are not as they seem on the surface. If you think this is a typical child abduction story, think again.

  1. Hmm The Innocent Wife sounds interesting- I like that he gets out and they have to actually learn to be together (a lot of “married in prison” stories revolve around people who stay incarcerated). Her One Mistakes sounds super gripping but like a tough read.

  2. I appreciated the twist in Her One Mistake. So I just downloaded Between the Lies from Netgalley and here I read it a few months back. LOL
